Speciociliatine is a naturally occurring monoterpenoid indole alkaloid found in the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa, the tree commonly known as kratom. It is a diastereomer of mitragynine, which means it shares the same molecular formula, C23H30N2O4, and the same indole scaffold, and differs in stereochemistry at the C-3 position.
Where it comes from
Like the other Mitragyna alkaloids, speciociliatine occurs in the leaf alkaloid fraction. Mitragynine is the predominant alkaloid in that fraction; speciociliatine is one of the minor alkaloids that sit alongside it. Because the two are stereoisomers, telling them apart is an analytical task rather than a matter of gross composition.
How it is identified
Speciociliatine is resolved from mitragynine and the other diastereomers by chromatographic separation, then confirmed by spectroscopic analysis. Standardizing a product to speciociliatine, rather than shipping whole-leaf material, depends on exactly this kind of measurement: you can only standardize what you can separate and quantify.
